Derek J. Avery, Sr. is a visionary leader dedicated to community empowerment, equitable development, and economic growth. Born in Houston’s 3rd Ward and raised in Southwest Alief (SWAT), his early experiences shaped his passion for service and advocacy. After facing homelessness at 16 following his mother’s passing from breast cancer, Derek committed himself to creating lasting change. He fell in love with the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where he has been serving for nearly 12 years, working to uplift communities through sustainable development and economic opportunity. As the Owner and CEO of COIR Development, he champions "Revitalization without Gentrification," ensuring sustainable, high-quality housing that strengthens communities without displacement. A devoted father and entrepreneur, Derek has spent nearly two decades tackling housing insecurity, economic development, and social justice. His work, spanning real estate, public service, and nonprofit leadership, has been instrumental in addressing critical issues such as the Sand Branch water crisis and financial inclusion in underserved areas. With an unwavering commitment to building a better future, Derek continues to drive innovative solutions that uplift communities and foster lasting economic opportunity.
